Repair Tip #1 Repairing Vinyl Flooring

When you repair or replace resilient flooring, use the adhesive the manufacturer specifies. If your flooring is old, you may need to take a sample to a flooring materials supplier and ask about the kind of adhesive is recommended. Be sure you know what kind of subfloor you have.

If there are bumps showing through the flooring from the subfloor, place a block of wood over the bumps and tap it lightly with a hammer. If this doesn't work, the bumps will be difficult to get rid of--you'll have to remove the floor covering to gain access to the subfloor so you can replace the nails or screws.

It may be that your flooring is old and you cannot find matching material to make a repair. Consider using a complementary or even contrasting color or design. If this isn't suitable, you may need to recover the entire floor.

To reaffix a tile that's lifted at one corner or replace a damaged tile, warm the damaged tile with a hair dryer, iron, or propane torch (be careful!) until it begins to curl. Focus the heat on the corner if you want to reglue a tile that's lifting. Peel it up, using a putty knife as shown, and scrape off the old adhesive.
Using a knotched spreader or trowel, as shown below left, spread resilient tile adhesive on the subfloor and push the tile firmly into it. Wipe away any excess adhesive.

Repair Tip #2

 Brown circular spots in ceiling:
When brown circular spots are discovered in ceiling areas, there is an obvious leak that must be addressed "immediately"! water causes considerable damage to wood and drywall, not to mention moisture that could attract termites. repair leak, purchase a stain kiln to be applied to water stain. Once stain has disappeared, apply paint to
match existing color, two coats for best results. Always paint spots beyond the spot itself approx six to eight inches in either direction.

Repair Tip #3

Foundation settlement:     cracks in walls or where wall meets ceiling are strong indication of settlement. In new homes, within a two year period, contact your builder. For older homes it is best to first repair cracks with drywall compound combined with durabond, or caulking where wall meets the ceiling. A more permanent fix is not recommended right away in that settelement may still be occurring. Once a professional has determined the true cause of the settlement and if settlement has ceased, then a more permanent fix can be had using joint tape, or fibered mesh to cover cracks along with compound mix.
